Major Elwin Rox Shain was born in Iowa City, Iowa on August 28, 1931. At the time of his death, he was married to wife, Nancy, and had 3 children: Christy, Sarah, and Rox. He was killed in action as an F-100 pilot in Phouc Long, Vietnam. His body was recovered and sent to the US for burial. Some internet data shows his middle name as Roy, but official paperwork lists it as Rox.
Major Shain's service record shows that he was educated at the USMA at West Point, Class of 1954. He later received a Master's Degree at the University of Colorado. The USMA website at this address describes each of the 14 class of 1954 members KIA:

Major Shain's service began on June 4, 1954 after his graduation from West Point. He spent the next few years in Denver during which time he qualified to fly. Beginning September 21, 1960 he was stationed in Ramstein air base, Germany as a pilot with the 417th Tactical Fighter Squadron. He was stationed there until June 1963. He had several assignments in the US included a station at the Pentagon until September 10, 1967 when he shipped out to Vietnam. Major Shain was Assistant Operations Officer for the 510th Tatical Fighter Squadron (Buzzards) at Bien Hoa air base in Vietnam. He flew over 200 combat missons; and just before he was scheduled to rotate home, he was KIA in his F-100 on July 28, 1968.
