Lindley Herbert Llewellyn was born in Polson, Montana on December 13, 1921 to parents Glen and Kathleen Lewellyn. Sometime before 1930, the family moved to Washington state. Lindley enlisted in the regular Navy in Portland, Oregon on January 25, 1941. January 1941, he was stationed at the Naval Station in San Diego for training. In 1942 he was on the USS Guest, DD 472 on transatlantic convoy duty. In June of 1943 he went to sub school in New London and in September 1943, transferred to COMSUBPAC at Mare Island.
Lindley was assigned to the USS Barb, on December 13, 1943, which at that time was being overhauled at Mare Island. Just prior to that time, Lindley married Lillian Burney on August 22, 1943, on the east coast.
The Barb returned to the Pacific and started her 7th war patrol on March 2, 1944 from Pearl Harbor and returned to port April 25, 1944. After Lindley's transfer off the Barb, she completed a successful 8th patrol ended July 5, 1944, under the command of Eugene Flukey.
Lindley joined the USS Tang crew on July 25, 1944 in Pearl Harbor. Navy muster roles confirm that he was on the Tang on September 27, 1944. Lindley was on the last 2 war patrols for Tang as RM3c, and was posthumously promoted to RM2c on November 1. 1944.
This sailor's group includes his posthumous Type 3 slot brooch Purple Heart and presentation box, posthumous named Good Conduct medal, Victory medal, Asiatic/Pacific medal, American Campaign medal, American Defense medal with FLEET bar and ribbon bars w/star, a 3 place ribbon bar that is faded, Navy Presidential citation ribbon bar, and a few other misc. pieces including a sharpshooter pin. Also included is an original 8×10 wedding photo of Lindley and Lilian Llewellyn. Internet research and over 60 pages of Lindley's records from the National Archives form part of this group.
Thanks to an Ancestry follower, the people in the group wedding photo are: Front row: Rose Burney, Lillian Burney, Louise DeCesare; Back row: Emil DeCesare, Charles Burney, Lindley Llewellyn, and William Burney. Rose and Charles are the bride's parents, William, her brother. Louise is the bride's aunt, and Emil her husband.
