George Bernard Levin was born in Chicago October 1, 1922 to his parents Sol and Lena Levin.
He enlisted in the Naval Reserve at the Naval Recruiting Station in Chicago on November 23, 1942. George was first assigned to training at Great Lakes, then between April and July 1943 he was at the Naval Training Station in College Station, Texas. From there, he was transferred to the Naval Training School at Treasure Island, San Francisco for further schooling until January 7, 1944. He then transferred to the sub base at Mare Island, thence reported to the sub base at New London on January 19, 1944. He was then transferred back to Mare Island where he arrived June 7, 1944. On June 17, he was transferred to Subron Sixteen Relief Crew. On July 21, he reported aboard the USS Harder. The Harder left from Fremantle, Australia on her 6th and final war patrol on August 5, 1944. She was in the company of Hake and Haddo to patrol the area west of Luzon. She was sunk on August 24, 1944 after being depth charged.
The group includes RT2c Levin's officially engraved posthumous Type 3 Purple Heart with its short titled presentation box and its cardboard shipping container with Levin's name on it. Other items include his WW2 Victory medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, American Defense medal, a US Navy cap tally, a US Navy anchor pin, and 2 Red Cross pins. Paper work includes copies of internet research, and copies of his files from the National Archives. Pictures of George are found on the internet including a Chicago high school photo of him in the "Von Stueben Progress for 1938". He is in the next to the top row, middle.
