Richard Alvin Ross was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on May 6, 1919, to his parents Charles and Tillie. He worked for Bethlehem Steel for a time. He enlisted in the service on June 21, 1941 in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, and started Army life as a Private. He was killed in Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. Records indicate that he was hit by artillery shell fragments. He was ultimately buried in Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown.

The Ross group consists of his officially engraved posthumous Purple Hear and its presentation case. Also included isan original newspaper clipping describing his funeral in Johnstown.
