GM3C James Karanutsos was serving on LSM 190 during the Okinawa campaign. The ship had been assigned to radar picket duty, which was a death sentence for many US ships. The same day that LSM 190 was sunk, so too were DD's Luce and Morrison and 3 other ships as a result of kamikazi attacks.

GM3C Karanutsos' group includes his posthumous officially engraved solid brooch Type 2 Purple Heart with its short titled presentation case, pictures of the LSM and internet research.
