Faust joined the Ohio National Guard June 8, 1915. He was part of Company A, 10th Infantry that became Company A of the 135th Machine Gun Battalion when they were Federalized. He advanced in rank, being discharged April 12, 1919 as a Sergeant. He had Mexican Border service and was overseas with the AEF from June 15, 1918 until March 25, 1019.

This medal group to Sgt Ralph E. Faust  includes his officially engraved Silver Star marked BBB&Co, Phila, and edge numbered 5554. Also in the group is a 3 bar WW1 Victory Medal with Ypres-Lys, Meuse Argonne and Defensive Sector bars. The Silver Star includes the box and shipping label to Faust's home in Ohio. The box is marked Bailey Banks & Biddle Co. 8-29-32 and has the correct number written on it.
